My inspiration is an amazing young lady who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of three. She underwent so many surgeries and saw so many doctors whose faces and treatments start to blend together after a while. She has been known to fight hard to not just live, but to live as normally as possible.
This amazing woman, who I’ll call Erica, just wanted to have a life like all of her friends. She wanted to be a “normal” kid. But there was nothing “normal” about her. Erica has a light that shines everywhere she goes. Her determination is inspiring and her attitude holds us all in awe.
Erica’s tumor wreaked havoc on her limbs, her mind, and her body. It caused her to live with issues that even the strongest man wouldn’t be able to deal with. She never let her disability actually disable her. Although her limbs didn’t always work the way she wanted them to, Erica would get on her hands and knees and play with other children. She rode horses, competed, and even won!
If you didn’t see the physical restrictions with your own eyes, you would never know just how much she had to overcome in order to do the things most people take for granted.
Erica’s heart is bigger than anyone I know. Even at her worst moments, she finds a way to make the lives of others even better. She’s always helping other people (including me) and even got her masters degree as an occupational therapist so that she could continue helping others.
When I was electrocuted and it felt like my life was over, I thought of this amazing young lady and all she has been through. I was a little ashamed that I wanted to give up after watching Erica make life look so easy. Through the years, her words encouraged me to keep going. Her journey taught me that nothing should hold me back from living the life I was put on this Earth to live.
I have become a life coach to help others the way that Erica helped me. My goal is to help people stop struggling and find a way to make life a little bit easier – even on the bad days.
