Feed Your Soul

Do you feel like you’re walking that never-ending circle of busy work?  Are you always busy but feel like you’re not accomplishing much?  When was the last time you read a book or painted a picture or knitted a scarf?

If you are feeling overwhelmed by life and can’t remember the last time you relaxed and did something that made you happy, now is the time to change your priorities.

Imagine for a moment that you are trying to catch up on laundry, hold that zoom meeting, help with homework, and cook supper.  You are in the middle of preparing dinner and you hear screaming coming from the bottom of the basement stairs.  You run to see what is going on and find your son laying in a heap of dirty clothes at the bottom of the steps.  Luckily, the only thing bruised is his ego.  However, by the time you walk back to the kitchen, the cat knocked the food onto the floor and the dog has eaten half of it.  What do you do?

Most of us would fall into a heap on the floor and cry – maybe even give up.

Now let’s change the story a little.

You woke up this morning, got dressed, and took the dog for a walk.  As you are sorting laundry, you listen to your favorite audiobook.  While you are preparing supper, you listen to your favorite playlist and even dance along.  All of a sudden you hear screaming coming from the basement.  You look down the steps and find your son lying there in a pile of dirty clothes. When you find that he’s okay, you take a few deep breaths to re-center your brain.  Then you go back to the kitchen to find the half-eaten food and two very guilty-looking animals.

At this point you have a choice to make.  Give into the “poor me” attitude that is creeping into your entire body or figure out a solution to the problem so that you can continue on with your day.

Honestly, I would probably start with the “poor me” attitude for a few minutes.  However, because I did things to make myself feel better which put me into a better headspace, I would probably pick up a take-out menu and give up on the cooking.  It’s a sign, right?  What would you do to make this situation a positive one for you?

Going from one dreaded task to another is not living.  Make sure that you add fun and excitement into your life – every day!  You cannot take care of anyone else if you are run down and have no energy.
